At Spirit of a Hero, we are continually inspired by the courage and resilience of our heroes and their families. Adam Mayo’s story is well-known to our community, but behind every hero is often a quiet strength—the strength of a loved one who stands by them through every battle. For Adam, that person is his wife, Jasmine.
Valentine’s Day 2012 was not the day of love and celebration Jasmine expected. At 2:30 in the morning, her phone rang. It was the flight doctor accompanying Adam on a training mission in Thailand. Jasmine’s world shifted as she heard Adam’s voice asking if the Marine Corps had contacted her. Then, the doctor delivered the devastating news: Adam had broken his neck and was being rushed to Bangkok for emergency surgery.
At that moment, Jasmine’s role in the family transformed. She went from being a devoted wife and mother to becoming Adam’s full-time caregiver. With a one-year-old son at home and six months pregnant with their second child, Jasmine found herself navigating an unimaginable situation. She managed sleepless nights, a newborn baby, and a husband who was suddenly a quadriplegic.
When Adam returned home from four months of rehabilitation, Jasmine was there to create a new sense of normalcy for their family. Everyday tasks became monumental. Where most families could simply hop in the car and go, Jasmine had to manage a 30-minute process to prepare Adam and their young children. But she never let the weight of these challenges dim her spirit.
Life as a caregiver is not just a role—it’s a sacrifice. Jasmine took on every responsibility, from daily care routines to ensuring her children experienced a loving, stable home. The simple things many of us take for granted, like watching a baseball game or playing catch, required planning and adaptation. Through it all, Jasmine remained a steadfast source of strength for Adam and their kids.
When we first met the Mayos, we immediately recognized Jasmine’s quiet resilience. At the time, Adam and Jasmine had two boys, but they felt their family wasn’t yet complete. Unfortunately, due to Adam’s injury, they could no longer have children naturally. They decided to pursue adoption, but the process seemed daunting.
That’s where Spirit of a Hero had the privilege to step in. We helped support them through the adoption process, and in August 2016, they officially welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their family. It was a moment of joy, and we were honored to play a part in helping the Mayo family find its missing piece.
Jasmine’s story is not just about caregiving—it’s about love, resilience, and the strength to turn hardship into hope. Her unwavering support has allowed Adam to thrive, and her determination has created a life where their family feels complete and loved.
At Spirit of a Hero, we believe that heroes come in many forms. Adam’s bravery and service are remarkable, but Jasmine’s story is a powerful reminder that behind every hero is often another hero—one who works quietly and courageously in the background.
We are so proud to call Jasmine and Adam part of our Spirit of a Hero family. Their journey is a testament to the power of love, community, and the human spirit. Their story is why we do what we do—standing alongside our heroes and their families, offering support, and celebrating their incredible strength.
