Adam Mayo’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, love, and the unwavering Spirit of a Hero. His journey began in April 2005 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, ready to serve his country with honor and pride. Just a year later, he married his high school sweetheart, Jasmine, and they began building a life filled with love, hope, and endless possibilities.
Adam’s service took him to Iraq in 2007 and again to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2009. In January 2011, the couple welcomed their first son, and life was on a beautiful path forward. However, in early 2012, everything changed.
While on a training mission in Thailand, Adam was attacked, suffering a severe neck injury that left him a quadriplegic. Instead of a Valentine’s Day call, Jasmine received the devastating news that their lives had been forever altered. The road ahead seemed daunting, but the Mayos faced it with strength, unity, and an indomitable spirit.
A few months after the attack, they welcomed their second child, proving that hope could thrive even in the darkest times. Adam was medically retired from the Marine Corps in December 2012, and life continued to challenge them. But Adam and Jasmine remained steadfast in their resolve. In November 2014, they opened their hearts and home to a one-month-old baby girl, officially adopting her in August 2016 and completing their beautiful family of five.
In 2016, Spirit of a Hero (SOAH) had the honor of meeting Adam and learning his story. It was clear from the start that Adam embodied the spirit and strength our organization celebrates. His perseverance and positive attitude made him a perfect fit for the SOAH family. As a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to supporting wounded veterans, first responders, and frontline workers, we strive to provide financial, moral, and community support to heroes like Adam and their families.
Through fundraising events, community outreach, and ongoing support, SOAH has been privileged to stand by Adam, Jasmine, and their children. Whether it’s helping with accessibility needs, providing financial assistance, or simply showing up as a community, our goal is to ensure the Mayos never feel alone on their journey.
Adam’s story is a beacon of hope and a reminder that even in the face of unimaginable adversity, the Spirit of a Hero can shine brightly. We are proud to have him as part of our SOAH family and look forward to continuing our mission of making a difference, one hero at a time.
